Tribute to Batman, 1960s Style

September 4th, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized — Movie Critic

From the moment that you hear “Na na na na (etc), Batman!”, you always know that you’re in for something good. Part of the show’s brilliance was its (arguably intentional) ability to appeal to young and old. Plenty of action for the kiddies and black humor for the adult audience.

Bob Kane created Batman to be a creature of the night, but in the 1950s comics became so macabre that the 60s show was needed to shed some lightheartedness on the characters. Enter Robin’s “holy” comments and Batman’s throw-away deadpan lines. When compared with the original comic, the TV show makes a point to laugh at itself. The program was satirical in nature, and when seen in that light, it is an enjoyable show. (Yes, even for fans of the more brooding, dark-hued version). Even TV critics of the era couldn’t make up their minds about the show. However, no one could deny that the program was a spectacular success when it debuted and for a while was the most popular, talked-about show in America.

To this day, people enjoy watching reruns and reminiscing of younger days when the fight scenes actually appeared intense and dynamic. As an adult, the scenes are hilarious with the various superimposed pop-art exclamations like “Thunnkk!” and “Kapow!”. It is obvious that fans don’t mind departing from the seriousness of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight from time to time. This is evident when visiting the site, holyblankbatman.com. Fans of the show, and Batman in general, have the ability to share and post their own ‘witty’ Robin sayings. People are embracing the concept and running with it- they’re making superheroes fun again in their own unique way.
