The “Twilight” of Stephanie Meyer’s Success

January 15th, 2010 Filed under: Uncategorized — Movie Critic

Pre employment background checks would assure you of her former life before the world wide success of the story that made everyone think twice about meeting a vampire, and Robert Pattinson the dreamboat that fans go mobbing and stalking. Stephanie Meyer was a stay at home mom before the thrills (and the earned million dollar bills) from her first and bestselling novel Twilight. Those pre employment background checks would surely report that her activities solely revolves around her three boys, going from swimming lessons to potty training.

It took a dream to make her usual rituals, make a different turn-towards her computer to type the story that rocked every nation worldwide (especially with the Harry Potter series done and collected). The date was June 2, 2003. It was a fine morning when Stephanie woke up from a dream that changed her life forever. It was the period on chapter 13 of the Twilight book. As we all know (or at least those who has read the Twilight), this chapter is the part where Edward took Bella to the meadow (which eventually in the next books, especially in the third: Eclipse, will be referred to as “our meadow” by Bella).

This is where that infamous line “So the lion fell in love with the lamb…” was said. And that sparkling body of Edward was revealed to Bella, an explanation as to why he and his family can’t come out in the sunlight (and made every girl swoon over Robert Pattinson after it was shown in the movies). Before I start blabbering more on this part of the story (and while I still can control myself) let us continue on Stephanie Meyer’s staggering success…. After her dream, her mind was filled thinking over the plot. That night, after everyone had gone to bed, Stephanie went typing the story. It has been a long time since Stephanie wrote on her computer and this one kept bothering her making her work almost immediately if it wasn’t for her kids.

Three months later, the book was done. With the encouragement of her sister, Stephanie submitted her manuscript to various publishing house until it landed its way to Little Brown where everyone was immediately taken by the story of the star-crossed lovers Edward and Bella. 2005 was Stephanie’s year. Twilight, being her first novel, took the 5th spot for The New York Times best seller list. It was also named as ALA Top Ten Books for Young Adults, Amazons.com Best Book of the Decade…So Far, and Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year. After the first book’s success, things got even better, a year later, with the release of its sequel entitled New Moon skyrocketing its way to the 1st spot in The New York Times best seller list for 25 weeks.

By 2007, the third book, Eclipse, was released world wide, making the Twilight Saga a phenomenal hit. The final book for the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn, was released on August 2, 2008, at 12:01 midnight. Stephanie got featured on magazines and tabloids and even headlined the Breaking Dawn Concert which celebrates the major success of the book as it sold 1.3 million copies in its first 24 hours. The Twilight craze became unstoppable, and heightening the madness level came with the release of the first book’s movie installment starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart who played Edward and Bella.

The debut of the movie of Twilight (directed by Catherine Hardwicke) hit #1 at the box office making it the highest grossing for a female director. It started a frenzy which anyone who got hold of the book can’t stop but read, and the movie, but watch. All of a sudden, the issues of whether a person is on Team Edward or Team Jacob became one for the debate. A toast to Stephanie Meyer and her books that “Hard to resist”. For all the Twi-hard fans out there watch out for the Eclipse, coming to theaters this June 2010.
