The Runaways Review

March 27th, 2010 Filed under: Uncategorized — Movie Critic

I just returned from viewing a great, new film. The Runaways is based on a true story about an all female, teenage rock band that was formed in the middle of the 1970s. Like the music they created, this bio-pic is full of attitude and raw power! It does not attempt to sugarcoat the trials and tribulations of drugs, sex and rock & roll.

What makes this movie different is that it takes place during the lives of five young women, who are developing through the stages of early adulthood. How they relate to success and each other, offers insight into what the path to a popular music career may consist of. This film also demonstrates how fresh, new talent can be abused and manipulated to an unhealthy degree. Watching the band and the dreams of it’s members disintegrate is heartbreaking, but predictable.

The soundtrack is a mix of The Runaways and classic rock from the 70s, which complements the scenery and wardrobes to perfection. 70′s glam rock, in particular David Bowie, is well represented. The acting is strong, especially Kristen Stewart who nails Joan Jett’s music and personality. I had no trouble believing anything that I saw or heard, even a few out of tune guitars!

I recommend The Runaways to anyone who appreciates the rock and roll fable that we have all seen before, but with a slightly different twist and an energy all it’s own. If you’re considering taking the kids, beware of sex, drugs, nasty language, and a little nudity.
