Memento – An Analysis

May 25th, 2010 Filed under: Uncategorized — Movie Critic

The brilliance of Memento didn’t just lie on a single aspect but in almost every aspect of the film. As the plot unfolds, the audience is provided the answers that they desperately needs from a previous scene. However, these answers will only lead to more questions that makes the audience wait for more.

This movie challenged so many concepts and so many ideas that have always been accepted. One, it says that truth is just as good as one person’s perception of reality. It raises the question of the truth being nothing being useless unless someone recognizes it. In this movie, the truth were ignored in favor of happiness. In the end, he got what he wanted and was not affected by his own manipulation because he didn’t even know about it.

This also raises the question of how deep memories are really embedded in a person’s mind. Leonard repeatedly talk of someone else who suffered the same condition, Sammy Jankis. He believed that Jankis faked his condition that inevitably will lead to the death of Jankis’ wife. The movie showed how a memory is repeated over and over and again and as it is repeated, things are altered.

Memories are not reliable. That was clear but so are physical evidence. In the end, it will make you think what really matters? Are we all just shaping our own truths so that we will recognize our own participation in the world? Is nothing absolute?

At the end, Leonard got what he wanted, the goal that he set himself to achieve. Yet, it didn’t bring him the satisfaction that he was hoping for. Again, this is a bold statement. People are naturally set out to achieve something for himself. Something that he would work for his entire life to get.

This movie says that it is indeed natural for any human being to set a goal for himself but the results are not what we expect. Ambitions are nothing, the destination is not what we expect to find and the journey is a lie.

There is nothing you can hold on to.
