Is the American “Office” Better Than the English “Office”?

December 6th, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized — Movie Critic

The Office is the award-winning hit TV show created by Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant. The show was first aired in the year 2000 in the UK on BBC television, and has since gone on to become the most successful British sitcom of all time. Due to the show’s extreme success and originality it has been remade in 19 other countries (at the time of writing) and has been translated into several different languages.

Most notably of all of these translations is the American version of The Office, which stars Steve Carrell as the impossible boss, Rainn Wilson as the pedantic salesman and John Kransinski as the only person in the office with any sense.

The first series of the US show was a nearly identical copy of the English version, with every character being a near match (for example, ‘Tim’ is called ‘Jim’ in the US version, and he too puts his desk-mates’ stapler in a bowl of jelly). It was clear that this first series was just a test – to see if the American audience could appreciate the hit show the same way that British audiences did.

The US Office has since gone on to make 6 series’ (compared to just two series’ that the English equivalent made) and shows no sign of stopping. What I like most about the US version is that it has taken on a whole new life of its own, and all of the characters have evolved so much from where they came from. In my opinion, the US Office is not better than the English version, just different but at the same time brilliant.
