Fire Up the Quattro!

This is I suppose an homage to the wonderful series Ashes to Ashes. A real coup on behalf of the BBC, who are, I feel to be congratulated for the originality and huge entertainment value of the programme.

The tenuous premise of the series is that a police officer is in a coma after being shot. While in said comatose state, she finds herself ‘back in time’ as Detective Inspector Drake (played by Keeley Hawes) in the 1980s and is trying to find her way back to the present.

The casting is superb, with the main character being Chief Inspector Gene Hunt (played by a very convincing Philip Glenister). Whilst his policing style is at times apparently unnecessarily violent, he is amazingly charismatic and secretly very caring of his fellow officers. They, in turn have unfailingly loyalty towards him and the force.

We are treated to the 1980′s clothing styles of high waistbands, huge shoulder pads, T shirt dresses and leggings, along with many favourite tunes from the era as part of the programme’s soundtrack.

We sit and watch aghast, as all officers sit at their office desks smoking and drinking whisky. It was, of course perfectly acceptable, even encouraged in those unenlightened times and we view the scenes with mild disbelief.

The series is littered with very funny ‘one liners’ and the storyline, albeit tenuous, has something of an ‘edge of the seat’ brilliance, a testament to the programme writers’ abilities.

So, a joy of a show. Cheesy? Maybe, but stylish and irreverent none the less
