The movie, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, which hit the big screens in the spring of 2008, was one of the most critically acclaimed comedy films of the year and featured a main character who was a musician, often times playing the piano as part of his career. The lead role was a character by the name of Peter Bretter, who wrote the music for a television show as a job and must have at some point made use of a piano lamp or piano lamps in his work. Jason Segal, famous for among other things his role as Marshall Erickson on the hit TV show, “How I Met Your Mother”, starred as Bretter and the plot revolved around him making an attempt at getting over a break up with his long time girlfriend and the star of the show he writes the music for, Sarah Marshall.
As the film begins the audience sees musician Peter sitting around at his apartment doing nothing and being lazy, eating cereal out of a massive bowl and generally looking like a slob. Pictures of him and his girlfriend adorn just about every empty space and then Sarah calls him, telling him she will be at his home to see him soon. When she gets there she has a sad look on her face and it turns out that Sarah has decided to break up with Peter. Having trouble dealing with his heartbreak, and following the advice of his quirky step brother, Peter goes on a vacation to Hawaii to get over his troubles. The only problem is that once at his desired resort, Peter finds that Sarah Marshall is there with her new boyfriend, bad boy English rocker Aldous Snow, played by comedian Russell Brand.
The film progresses as Peter meets and begins a romance with the front desk worker at the hotel named Rachel, played by Mila Kunis of, “That 70s Show” and “Family Guy”. At one point, it comes out that Peter’s ultimate dream is to make a musical with puppets about Dracula and eternal love, things that he feel go hand in hand. Through the movie Peter cultivates his feelings for Rachel the hotel worker while also still hurting and having left over feelings for Sarah. When notorious womanizer Aldous Snow leaves and effectively dumps Sarah, Peter has a moment with her that jeopardizes his relationship with Rachel, who then tells him that she never wants to see him again. However, at the end of the film Peter gets his life back together as a musician and makes his long hoped for puppet musical about Dracula and gets together with Rachel.
While the actual description of the plots and hasty depiction of events in the film make it seem like melodramatic garbage the actual movie is a comedy that has something for everyone, some gross out jokes for the guys and romance and relationship humor for the women. Anyone seeking a great date movie certainly could not go wrong with, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”.
