Why Not Get Started With a Film Making Course?
July 8th, 2010 Filed under: Movies — Movie CriticSo you love films and want to make movies but don’t know where to start. People get into film making at any age and stage in life. You could be a student doing something totally unrelated. It may be just something you want to do or you might want to change career paths.
Well, film knowledge can be easily had and one of the best places to start is your local town or nearest city. There are bound to be film clubs, colleges and even universities that will be running film based courses in the evening or part time during the day.
At the more academic institutions you may only be able to find a film studies type course. These are good routes if you want an understanding of how a film is put together in a stylistic way and what makes it a good or bad film. But there will usually be very little in the way of practical instruction. Film studies is about film but from an academic perspective and not a practical one. If you are in a rush you may want to get to the nuts and bolts of how to make movies.
In this case you should look for a practically weighted course or club to fulfill your ambitions. These should contain an emphasis on exercises using equipment, editing and photographic techniques as well as instruction on form, style and composition. A major component should focus on how to work with actors as this is crucial for directors but is all too often overshadowed by technical know how.
