The show is a smash hit around the world attracting an audience of over 350 million people In 2001 the show was scrapped due to poor ratings! "Who is the Stig? " is the burning question most people think about when asked about the programme. You have to be over 18 to apply for an audience pass due to the strong language used by the presenters, Jeremy Clarkson in particular!
Jeremy Clarkson is a tall man at 6 foot 5 inches! The first episode went out in 1977 at the Pebble Mills studio. The theme tune is "Jessica" by the Allman brothers. Richard Hammond survived a high speed crash in 2006 when he was doing an amazing 288 miles per hour! The show is filmed on location in an aircraft hangar.
You can find archive top gear shows on the tv channel Dave. "Don’t Stop me now" by Queen was voted the best song to drive to by the viewers. Previous presenters have included Deal or no Deal host Noel Edmonds and newsreader Angela Rippon. Jeremy Clarkson once declared on the show that he would rather have bird flu than the car he was driving! In 2005 the show won an international Emmy award.
The programme now has worldwide editions including Australia and Russia. At the end of each series the presenters agree on the coveted Car of the year award. James May, one of the hosts has the nickname "Captain Slow" due to his careful driving style and slow speed!
