Not just a movie for wrestling fans. I find the need to say this, because I am not a big wrestling fan, and so I was a bit hesitant to view this movie. I thought it was going to be just about wrestling and it is to a point, however it is a lot more about the life story of an aging professional wrestler, past his prime, and his difficulties with letting go of the in the ring experience. The main character Randy, The Ram needs to find a way to feel important, since wrestling has pretty much consumed all of his being, in short was his entire life. He is sad and lonely in the life he created and he gradually needs to rediscover himself.
Randy tries to bring the people around him in closer. The woman in his life (Marisa Tomei) is an aging stripper with similar issues. She needs to move on from this step in life where she has become stuck. They have an authentic looking struggle to come together and build a relationship. Randy’s estranged daughter is played by Evan Rachel Wood. They face an uphill battle to build the foundation of a father daughter relationship. This is a very emotional part of the film.
This fictional movie is about true life in all its many aspects and dimensions. It is emotional and expressive. The Ram is Mickey Rourke. You are so drawn into his performance that the ram becomes an actual person, not a part played by an actor.
There is more than romance and relationships. Randy does get down and dirty in some physical encounters. He throws down with some wrestling bouts involving the men who own the market where he buys groceries and the park where he rents his trailer space. The fighting doesn’t bring the movie down, it keeps it streaming along.
The Wrestler has it all! There’s the action of fighting, The drama of love and relationships, and the feel good of hope. The acting and directing are incredible. It is a must see for fans of either Action or Drama style movies. Whether you are into wrestling or not will not affect your enjoyment of this film. Everyone will find something they like about this movie.
