Antonio Banderas to Return Home

November 18th, 2008 |

Antonio Banderas has announced recently that he would like to return to his home country of Spain having spent enough time in Hollywood over the years. The move would be in order for the successful actor to move away from starring roles and be able to concentrate more on directing, in particular movies that as he puts it are "often suffocated by Hollywood."

He has recently been touring some of the Arab countries with his wife, famed actress Melanie Griffiths to raise money for a film he has written and hopes to both direct and star in about the last Moorish King in Spain entitled "Sultan". The film tells the story of Boabdil, who was forced to surrender Granada to the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella in the year 1492 which was crucial to the shaping of modern Spain that we know today.

The film is to be told with a pro-Arab view point, and consequently Banderas and his wife have been visiting countries throughout the Middle East hoping to tap into their nostalgia of the long legacy of Arab rule in Southern Spain. Their tour has taken the couple to the International Film Festival being held in Abu Dhabi and planned trips to Saudi Arabia and Qatar are planned to follow.

King Juan Carlos and his wife Queen Sofia are said to be backing the film all the way and very much hope that it is made. Banderas has held the title of most well known Spanish actor in Hollywood for a long time, but has always planned to return to Spain. He was born in Malaga, although time will tell whether he will return there or if he will choose a different area in which to live. There are certainly plenty of beautiful places to choose from.
